Service Projects
We have embarked on many service projects. Some of which were one-time endeavors while others are ongoing to this day. Locally these projects are:
- Pioneer Cemetery: For several years we cleaned up and maintained the Coos Bay cemetery which had long been neglected and has since been turned over to other organizations.
- Highway Clean-up: We have adopted two miles of highway west of Charleston as our ongoing beautification project.
- Scholarships: We sponsored a “Walk Around the Clock for SWOCC” for three years aimed at providing local scholarships.
- Shots for Tiny Tots: Click the sub-menu "Shots For Tots" under "Service Projects" for a description and history of this project.
- Financial Assistance: We help to support the Victim's Assistance Program of Coos County as well as the Women's Safety and Resource Center.
- Festival of the Trees: Our annual Festival of the Trees held at Christmastime has been instrumental in raising funds to help various local agencies as well as our immunization program.
- Living Suite: We sponsored a living suite through the ATOL Center at the North Bend Hotel for low income or handicapped individuals.
- Waterfall Clinic: Our club provided the materials and labor in partnership with Zonta to refurbish the Waterfall Clinic building in North Bend. This facility serves the medical needs of local families.
- Bay Area Fun Festival Parade: We coordinate the annual Bay Area Fun Festival Parade held in September in Coos Bay.
- Low-income Family Assistance: Recently we have adopted a local low-income family to provide the necessities that otherwise cannot be made available.
- Academy Scholarships: We provide annual scholarships to the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy for deserving students of our High Schools.
- SMART Program: We provide continued support for the local SMART program bring reading skills to our young people.
- Bay Area Rotary Club Golf Tournament : Our annual June golf tournament attracts teams and prize donations from local organizations and businesses. The event raises $6,000 per year on average, which helps support Bay Area Rotary Club projects throughout the year.
- R.A.W. (Rotary At Work) Calendar: In 2006, thirteen brave and brazen Bay Area Rotary Club members bared their all (well, almost all) to raise funds for several local agencies and projects. While the calendar featured our "men from the mudflats" posing in the raw, the calendar was STILL well received by our local community and fellow Rotarians. However, the calendar was banned in Boston (just kidding).
Internationally we also support:
- Ongoing financial support to Rotary International
- Foundation for humanitarian aid in third world countries around the globe.
- Project Amigo, whose aim is to provide educational opportunities and appropriate housing for poor families in Colima, Mexico .
- Partnered with the Coos Bay-North bend club in efforts to alleviate hardships caused by Hurricane Mitch in Honduras .
- Helped supply medical equipment shipments to Kamchatka , Russia in cooperation with other clubs in our District.
- We host incoming exchange students each year from various countries around the world for a year-long study and cultural experience. We also sponsor outgoing students from our local High Schools to study abroad.
All in all, we are a roll-up-the-sleeves group of people dedicated to the Rotary ideal of world peace through understanding and help to our fellow man.
